New arrivals for the week of April 7, 2015
The Immagrant
A Most Violent Year

Greetings everyone,

There were so few new releases this week our distributor didn't even bother sending them -- which just means next week there will be even more! The two bigg(ish) new releases that should have shown up were: "The Immigrant" (w/Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner) and "A Most Violent Year" (w/Oscar Isaac, Jessica Chastain, Albert Brooks, David Oyelowo and Alessandro Nivola). We did get three titles added to the International Mystery Section: Blood of the Vine S2 (France), East West 101 S2 & 3 (Australia) and Kennedy's Brain (Germany/Sweden, based on a novel by Henning Mankell of Wallander fame). In case you're not sure where to jump in, I'll get a Top Renter list posted for the International Mystery Section soon. Hopefully next week's box will show up this Friday so we can get a few of last week's things out before the weekend. Either way, it looks like we have a beautiful weekend ahead of us.

Once again, Orson Welles genre defining classic "Touch of Evil" (1958) finds itself in the #1 position on the Top Renting Film Noir Titles list. Entering the Top 3 for the first time is John Farrow's "The Big Clock" (1948) and coming in third is Billy Wilders "Double Indemnity" (1944). The rest of the Top 10 proves to be mostly the usual suspects in a slightly rearranged order -- including Fritz Lang's "Ministry of Fear" (1944), Douglas Sirk's "Sleep, My Love" (1948) and Michael Curtiz's "Mildred Pierce" (1945). American Cinematheque just presented Film Noir: The 17th Annual Festival of Film Noir at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and BBC Culture recently did a story "Eight of the Greatest Film Noirs" -- between those and our Top Renter listing, you should be able to find some great titles to watch this week. By the way, we only keep the classic Film Noir in our Film Noir section. The newer Noir titles (The Long Goodbye, Body Heat, Hammett, Mona Lisa, Brick, etc) can be found scattered throughout the store. Here are the Top Renters from our Film Noir section:
1 TOUCH OF EVIL
2 BIG CLOCK, THE
3 DOUBLE INDEMNITY
4 KISS ME DEADLY
5 MALTESE FALCON
6 MINISTRY OF FEAR
7 SLEEP, MY LOVE
8 ASPHALT JUNGLE, THE
9 MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE
10 MILDRED PIERCE
(a longer version of this list and more "Top 100" lists can be found here)

Have a great week...

Geoff (and all the other Rentertarians)
